Modern Statistical Learning Methods in Engineering and Biomedical Sciences

We would like to invite you to join us at the workshop "Modern Statistical Learning Methods in Engineering and Biomedical Sciences". The workshop will be held on May 2-3, 2005 at the CVIP Lab, Department of Electrical Engineering at UofL Campus. We also would like to encourage you to contribute a poster in one of the two poster sessions that will be held during the workshop.

Synopsis of the Workshop Content

The workshop shall give an overview of statistical models for data mining, inference, and prediction with special emphasis on their application to image processing, especially in biomedical applications. With the rapid developments in Internet technology, genomics, and other high tech. industries, we rely increasingly on statistical learning theory to exploit the vast amounts of complex data. The workshop intends to provide a general overview of some of the main tools in supervised learning, including boosting and support vector machines. It shall also cover many new areas of unsupervised learning and data mining like clustering, principal components, principal curves and self organizing maps. There will be a preparatory tutorial for all workshop participants on Saturday April 30, covering the basic statistical concepts that shall be relevant during Monday and Tuesday sessions.

Targeted Audience  

The workshop is intended for graduate students and researchers in engineering and bio-medical sciences who would like to learn the current state of the art of the statistical learning theory and its software implementations.  Examples of applications shall be selected so as to give the researchers some clear examples of applicability of the methods discussed. Some basic knowledge of statistical principles is assumed. However, for those who are not at home with relevant statistical concepts, a brief refresher shall be given in a tutorial session on Saturday April 30-th.

 Organizing Committee

The workshop is sponsored by the Statistics Group at the Department of Mathematics and by the CVIP  Lab at the Department of Electrical Engineering. The workshop is organized by Greg Rempala and Aly A. Farag.

Featured speakers

David Banks is a Professor of the Practice of Statistics at the Institute of Statistics and Decision Science at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. He is  at present a Secretary of the International Federation of Classification Societies and was until recently a President  of the Classification Society of North America. Professor Banks is one of the nation's leading researchers in machine learning and data mining methods with many years of experience in practical applications of these and other modern statistical methods in a variety of settings.

Georgy Gimel’farb  is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is a member of IEEE Society and an internationally recognized scholar in the area of modern statistical methods in image and signal processing as the author of several well-known books on the subject.

Both presenters have a reputation for being good instructors who interact well with the needs of the audience.

Poster sessions

There will be two poster sessions open to all registered workshop participants. There will be a prize of $100 for the best original research poster presented given out by the Workshop Scientific Committee.

Registration and fees

There shall be a registration fee for the workshop of $100 for faculty and of $50 for students.  This fee covers lunch on Monday and Tuesday as well as a CD with pdf files of all the workshop presentations and materials.
